The
Vice-President
of
the
European
Commission,
Margaritis
Schinas,
announced
today,
Wednesday,
the
introduction
of
a
series
of
five
measures
to
tackle
the
“exceptional”
migration
crisis
currently
affecting
the
Canary
Islands.
This
initiative
includes,
among
other
actions,
the
provision
of
14
million
euros
in
additional
support
to
enhance
the
reception
systems
on
the
islands.
This
set
of
measures
was
unveiled
by
the
official
responsible
for
promoting
our
European
way
of
life
during
a
press
conference,
where
he
was
joined
by
the
President
of
the
Canary
Islands,
Fernando
Clavijo,
during
his
visit
to
the
islands
to
address
the
migratory
challenges
confronting
the
archipelago.
Vice-President
Schinas’
visit
is
intended
to
express
solidarity
with
the
inhabitants
of
Spain
and
the
Canary
Islands,
as
well
as
to
reaffirm
the
EU’s
ongoing
support
in
migration
management.
During
this
visit,
discussions
will
focus
on
how
the
European
Union
can
continue
to
assist
the
Canary
Islands
and
Spain
in
handling
the
rise
in
irregular
arrivals,
both
through
financial
and
operational
resources,
and
by
encouraging
a
more
robust
dialogue
with
key
partner
nations.
