La
Laguna
hosted
the
principal
events
of
the
main
day
of
the
Fiestas
del
Santísimo
Cristo,
which
commemorates
the
traditional
return
of
the
image
of
the
crucified
Christ
from
the
interior
of
the
Cathedral
to
its
Royal
Sanctuary.
The
day
unfolded
smoothly
and
drew
hundreds
of
attendees
to
the
historic
centre,
both
for
the
Eucharistic
celebration
and
the
return
procession,
as
reported
by
the
City
Council.
The
scheduled
events
commenced
at
10:15
with
a
civil-military
procession
and
the
transfer
of
the
royal
standard
from
the
Town
Hall
to
the
Cathedral,
attended
by
various
civil,
military
and
consular
dignitaries.
On
this
occasion,
the
president
of
the
Parliament
of
the
Canary
Islands,
Astrid
Pérez,
represented
the
Royal
House.
Other
officials
including
the
deputy
government
delegate
in
the
Canary
Islands,
Javier
Plata,
and
the
president
of
the
Cabildo
of
Tenerife,
Rosa
Dávila,
were
also
present,
alongside
a
significant
representation
from
the
City
Council
of
La
Laguna
and
other
island
institutions.
Following
the
celebration
of
the
solemn
Eucharist,
the
return
procession
took
place,
transporting
the
Christ
of
La
Laguna
from
the
Cathedral
to
its
historic
sanctuary.
Saturday’s
events
culminated
in
the
celebration
of
Heritage
Night
and
a
procession
of
the
revered
image
of
Christ
through
the
main
thoroughfares
of
the
city,
concluding
with
its
return
to
the
square,
where
the
customary
fireworks
display
began
at
11:30
p.m.
The
festivities
concluded
with
the
“megaverbenazo”
of
Christ,
featuring
performances
by
El
Morocho
y
la
Gran
Orquesta,
Virginia
Guantanamera,
and
The
Boys
Machine.
The
Mayor
of
La
Laguna,
Luis
Yeray
Gutiérrez,
emphasised
“the
significance
and
emotion
that
this
day
holds
for
the
inhabitants
of
La
Laguna”.
“Each
one
of
us,
whether
we
hold
religious
beliefs
or
not,
cherish
fond
memories
associated
with
this
14th
of
September
from
our
childhood,
strolling
with
family
through
the
city’s
streets
while
admiring
our
revered
image
on
its
iconic
journey
to
the
Plaza
del
Cristo,”
the
mayor
reminisced.
